    Dear Parent/Guardian:

My name is Barry Henry and I will be your child’s U.S. History/Economics/Civics teacher this semester. I will be spending the next twenty weeks with your child and hope to have the opportunity to speak with you. I would like to share with you a few things about myself professionally and personally.

I am currently beginning my 20th year at Carman-Ainsworth School District. I received my B.A. from the University of Michigan, M.A. in education from Marygrove University and M.E.L. from the American College of Education. I enjoy many athletic activities as well as spending time outdoors. I also enjoy spending time with my family and understand the importance of their support.

I believe with your support your child will have a rewarding semester in my class.

My mission is to help students realize their full potential and to create an environment that values respect and cooperation as well as one that facilitates learning.  I will challenge the students each day, and prepare them for more daunting tasks. To ensure students have the self-confidence and self-worth to be productive members of society I do have high expectations for all of my students and will cooperate with them to meet these goals.

I have a genuine interest in all of my students and believe that they all deserve understanding and respect. I will strive to meet these expectations in every situation. I only ask that the favor be reciprocated.

I am anticipating a rewarding and productive semester. You will periodically be updated on your child’s progress, but if you wish more frequent updates please contact me. Also contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns. You can reach my phone at (810) 591-5483.

I look forward to sharing the educational experience with your son/daughter in our classroom.

NOTE:  I do not always assign homework, but do expect students to prepare on their own. Research indicates actively studying ten (10) minutes every night increases comprehension & retention of information. I will be working with an interactive notebook, which is a semester long project that contains most of our assignments and notes. Students should always be updating and organizing their interactive notebook and reviewing daily notes (highlighting information and preparing questions for the next day’s discussion.)  I would encourage you to look at their interactive notebooks, check on their organization, note taking and completion of assignments. Hopefully this will help you avoid the response, “I don’t have any homework.”

    Sincerely,

    Barry Henry
