Course Description and Overview of Content:

This is a beginning course in computer science. The student will develop basic skills and concepts in: problem solving techniques, if/then statements, loops, decision making, strings, arrays, local and global variables, and graphics.  We will spend time programming on TI-84 calculators, Visual Basic, MIT App Inventor, Python, and Alice.

    Course Goal/ Intended Outcomes:

The student will be able to use the ideas developed in this course to write programs in multiple languages as well as have a strong background for transfer of programming methods to other languages.

    Format and Activities:

Most information is delivered in lecture and class participation style. New information will be discussed, examples given, and problems posed. Taking good notes is extremely important, as it will be the main reference for the student.  After the student has been given time to work on their solution, we will discuss the possible outcomes. All this information should be written in the student notebook. These notebooks and only these notebooks may be used as reference material on the Final Exam.  The run of the program will be checked with the student on their assigned computer. In some class sessions, the student will be given materials to read and follow a step-by-step format in which a program is developed and entered into the computer.

    Grading:

The semester grade will be calculated using:

                Programs…………………………..…………………............…40%

                Assessments…………………………………………………………40%

                Final Exam……………………………………………………………20%

**Late assignments will be reduced by 20% each day that they are late.  It is your responsibility to show me assignments that you have missed.

    Attendance/ Tardiness:

It is important that you are in attendance to class everyday. Attendance has a direct effect on your classroom performance.  Time given for make up of assignments missed during excused absences will be one more day than the number of days absent.

Please note the following as it is extremely important:

Student’s may not use any software, which has not been assigned for their use. They are not to change the configuration of the system or software in any way. They are not to load programs or data from drives brought into the classroom.  Flash drives are never to be used unless given special permission from the teacher.  Students who do not adhere to the policy will be directed to a principal for discipline, and their use of the computers in this lab may be discontinued.  All students must sign and have their parent or guardian sign the Carman-Ainsworth Acceptable Use Practices For Personal Computer and/or Networks policy agreement before they may use computers in the lab.

    Academic Integrity:

Students who are found to be cheating on an assignment, test, or quiz will loose all credit for the entire assignment. Loading a part or all of another students program into your computer, flash drive, or calculator is considered cheating.

    Miscellaneous

Students will be allowed 3 passes each semester.  Please use them wisely as no additional passes will be allowed.

Students must turn monitors off when Mr. Young is teaching.  This is the time to take notes and pay attention and no exceptions will be made to this rule.

Cell phones and music devices may not be used during the class period.  If I see you using one (looking at or typing on), I will take it from you and take it to the office where it will need to be picked up by a parent/guardian.
